A Lifetime of Jokes, Quotes and Other Things
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — Colorado resident Vern Dayhoff announces his new book, A Lifetime of Jokes, Quotes and Other Things. In the works for several years, it is his personal collection of fun stories about the crazy world and its inhabitants.
A Lifetime of Jokes is also an encouraging compendium for the down trodden, and is nourishment for the body, mind and spirit. The quick-read collection contains poignant and humorous words of wisdom in the form of poems, jokes, advice, anecdotes and quick facts.
A longtime educator, witty raconteur and jokester, Dayhoff’s new book reads like a funny compilation of every humorous story shared throughout the years, in one volume. Whether Dayhoff’s blurbs make you laugh out loud, shed a tear or scratch your head, enjoyment abounds reading his collection of wit and wisdom.
A Lifetime of Jokes also explains the arcane such as why people frequently marry in June (because people historically took their yearly bath in May and smelled better) to some of Yogi Berra’s more illustrious statements such as: “Baseball is 90% mental -- the other half is physical;” “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over;” and “Anyone who goes to a psychologist ought to have his head examined.”
Dayhoff was born in York County, Pennsylvania, and enlisted in the Army Air Corps just before World War II broke out and he found himself in the China-Burma-India Theater. There, he served as crew chief on the famed North American B-25 “Mitchell” bombers flying the Humps on dangerous bombing routes.
After his discharge from the Army, Dayhoff kicked around finding various jobs as a construction worker, an assistant route foreman for a local newspaper, an auto mechanic and as a fireman on the Seaboard Airline Railroad before re-enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1947.
After more than 21 years of military service, Dayhoff retired from the United States Air Force in 1964. Three years later, he was back at work as a teacher in Colorado. Dayhoff coincidentally taught biology for 22 years at Colorado Springs’ General William (Billy) Mitchell High School in the same room – a school-district record that still stands.
During that time, he received multiple honors including the “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” award -- an honor only 5 percent of our nation’s teachers receive. Fewer than two percent of teachers are included in more than one edition – Dayhoff is a multiple-year honoree.
Today, Vern Dayhoff is happily married to his wife, Georgia, of 41 years. Together, they are enjoying retirement with their 5 daughters, 14 children and 27 great grandchildren. He attributes his longevity to his wife’s preservation of vegetables and her excellent cooking abilities.
When weather permits, Dayhoff is an avid bird watcher with 3,141 species of birds counted on his life list. He is also an active member in several birding organizations in Colorado.
